1. What is the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200?

The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router lets you access the Internet via wireless connection or through one of its four (4) Gigabit Ethernet ports.  With the built-in Storage Link, you can add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using USB 2.0 hard drives, or plug in a USB flash disk to access your portable data files.  The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200's built-in media server streams music, videos and photos from an attached storage device to any UPnP-compatible media adapter or player.  This router can create two (2) separate Wireless-N networks simultaneously:  the 5 GHz radio frequency band and the 2.4 GHz band.

2. What default IP address, username and password are used to login to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200?

The default IP address is 192.168.1.1.  To log in, enter “admin” on the password field and leave the username blank.

3. How can I reset the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 to factory defaults?

Press and hold the Reset button of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 router located at the back panel for 10 seconds then release.  Alternatively, use the web-based setup page, go to Administration tab > Factory Defaults and click the Restore Factory Defaults button.

4. Can I use a USB 2.0 hard drive on the USB port?

1. What is the default Wireless Network Name (SSID) of Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200?

The default Wireless Network Name (SSID) of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 is the LinksysXXXXX.

NOTE:  The XXXXX in the example above represents the last five (5) digits of the router’s serial number, which is found at the bottom of the router.  You have to upgrade your firmware to have LinksysXXXXX as your default SSID.

The router supports the following wireless security options:  WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode, WPA2 Personal, WPA Personal, WPA2/WPA Enterprise Mixed Mode, WPA2 Enterprise, WPA Enterprise, WEP, and RADIUS.

FIRMWARE UPGRADE METHOD

1. How do I upgrade the firmware on the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200?

Use the web-based setup page.  Go to Administration tab > Firmware Upgrade.  Select the file to upgrade by using the Browse... button and then click Start to Upgrade.  To know more about upgrading your Linksys router’s firmware, click here.

IMPORTANT:  If your router has a storage link and your storage device is connected to it, make sure to remove the storage device before you proceed in upgrading the router’s firmware as this may result to data loss.  Make sure also that you have created a backup configuration before removing the storage device.  For instructions on how to create a backup, click here.

NOTE:  Do NOT reset or powercycle the router until the upgrade is complete.

Yes, you can create an FTP server that can be accessed from your local network or from the Internet.

Yes.  In order to add other users, go to Storage > Administration and make sure to disable the option Anonymous Disk Access.

6. Is the Guest network secured?

Yes.  Even though the Guest network says it is unsecured, the Linksys Connect software automatically assigns a password for your Guest network which users will need to be able to access the Internet while being connected to the Guest network.

Anybody will be able to connect to the unsecured Guest network but once users open up a web browser such as Internet Explorer, a password will be required from them to access the Internet.  For more information about Guest network, click here.

Yes.

10. Why is my computer not detecting the 5 GHz signal from my Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200?

Your computer may not be able to detect the 5 GHz wireless signal due to the following reasons:

NOTE:  If you have already set the SSID broadcast of your 5 GHz network to Enabled and it is still not showing up in the available wireless networks list, try disconnecting the power cord from your router and then reconnect it after 10 seconds.

11. Can I schedule the Wi-Fi broadcast of my router?

No.  You can only set Internet access restrictions and Parental Controls.

12. What should I do if I don’t see a list of groups to set permissions to the shares I created?

You won’t see a list of groups to set permissions to the shares that you have created if the Anonymous Disk Access feature in the web-based setup page is set to Enabled.  To allow setting permissions to a group, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
Click on the Storage tab, then select the Administration sub-tab.

Step 3:
Look for the Anonymous Access section and set Anonymous Disk Access to Disabled.

Step 4:
Click Save Settings.

13. Can I set up my router in Bridge Mode?

Yes.  Setting up your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 router in Bridge Mode will allow your device to act as an access point or a wireless bridge.  However, take note of the following once you decide to set your device into Bridge mode:

IMPORTANT:  The option to set your router to Bridge Mode will only be available if your device has the latest firmware version.  If you have an older firmware version, you need to upgrade the firmware of your device.

No.  Any wireless device like a wireless TV can be connected directly to the router but not through the computer that is connected to it.

15. Is it possible to set a time or access restrictions for my wireless radio?

No.  You can run Parental Controls on a schedule but the radio itself cannot be enabled or disabled at a set time.

No.  The Guest network is a secured network that provides ONLY Internet access to wireless devices with the router limiting communication with other computers.  It has a different password from the main network and does not allow file and printer access.
