RE1000 Frequently Asked Questions

The Linksys RE1000 Wireless-N Range Extender lets you repeat the wireless signal of any access point or router to provide Internet connectivity in hard to reach areas through a wired or wireless connection.

2. What default IP address, username and password can be used to login to the RE1000?

The default IP address of the RE1000 is 192.168.1.1 and the username and password is “admin”.

NOTE: When the RE1000 is already connected to your router, the router will automatically assign a different IP address to it so an IP address conflict will not occur.

3. How do I reset the RE1000 to factory default settings?

You can reset the RE1000 to its factory default settings by pressing and holding the Reset button located at the top panel of the device for eight (8) seconds. You can also perform a reset through the web-based setup page of the device. To learn how, click here.

4. How do I access the RE1000's web-based setup page?

You can access the Linksys RE1000’s web-based setup page by launching a web-browser and entering the IP address of your range extender in the address field. To learn more about accessing your range extender’s web-based setup page, click here.

5. How can I see the wireless devices that are connected to my RE1000?

You can view the names, MAC address and Hop number information on the wireless connected clients by going to Status > WLAN Statistics > Wireless Clients Table on the RE1000’s web-based setup page.

6. Can I set up a password to my RE1000 that is different from my router or access point?

Yes. Just make sure to take note of the password to avoid problems logging into the extender’s web-based setup page.

7. Can I set up my RE1000 without using the installation CD?

Yes. You can manually set up your Linksys RE1000. For instructions, click here.

8. What operating systems are compatible with the RE1000?

The RE1000 is compatible with the following operating systems:

Mac OS X® 10 or higher
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8

INITIAL SET UP

1. How can I setup the RE1000 to connect to my router or access point?

There are three (3) ways to set up the RE1000:

i. By running the Setup CD that comes with the device. For instructions, click here.

NOTE: If you do not have the Setup CD, you can download the Cisco Connect setup software from the Linksys Support Site.

ii. By using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) button on the range extender if your router also supports this feature. To learn how to connect devices using this feature, click here.

WIRELESS SECURITY

1. What types of security does the RE1000 support?

The extender supports the following wireless security options: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)2/WPA Mixed Mode, WPA2 Personal, WPA Personal and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).

2. What would be the difference between using WEP and WPA/WPA2 security type on my RE1000?

WPA2 is the strongest security encryption available. WEP is not as secure as WPA.

3. Is the RE1000 compatible with the previous wireless standards?

Yes. However, it will only run on the wireless speed of the standard used.

NOTE: The RE1000 is not yet compatible with the Wireless-AC technology.

4. Does the RE1000 support WEP with ASCII format security key?

No. The RE1000 only supports WEP with HEX format security key. If you are using the RE1000 with a gateway that was set to WEP ASCII format, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to get assistance.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1. My router is properly configured, why can’t my range extender detect/find any wireless network?

Make sure the range extender is powered ON and its power light is solid. For RE1000 v1, the power light is the Cisco logo. For RE1000 v1.5, the power light is located above the Cisco logo.

Make sure it is within the wireless range of your router. To know the wireless range of your router, click here.

There might be signal obstructions between your router and your range extender. Try transferring your range extender to another location. Avoid placing your range extender near metal objects, masonry walls, and reflective surfaces such as mirrors.

Your wireless network name (SSID) may be hidden or disabled. As a result, the Setup Wizard can't see that it's available. If your wireless network name is hidden, click My network is hidden. You'll be asked to enter your SSID and password and then the Setup Wizard can connect to it and continue. To learn more, click here.

2. Why can’t my RE1000 detect my 5 GHz network?

The Linksys RE1000 is only compatible with a 2.4 GHz wireless network.

3. What should I do if I encounter errors during setup?

If you already tried installing the range extender and encountered an error, you may need to reset the RE1000 before you try running the Setup CD again. You can also try downloading the latest setup software of the range extender from the RE1000 product page to ensure that you are using an updated version.

4. What settings do I need to prepare for the RE1000 setup?

Before you start the setup process, make sure that you have the following:

Active 2.4 GHz wireless network connection
The range extender will only detect and work with the 2.4 GHz network.
Wireless Network Name (SSID)
If you have a dual-band router, make sure that the network name of your 2.4 GHz network is different from that of the 5 GHz.
Password or Security Key
For better connection and performance, it is recommended to use the following security types: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)2/WPA Mixed Mode, WPA2 Personal and WPA Personal.

SPECIAL FEATURES

1. Does the RE1000 come with a software for initial installation?

2. Does the RE1000 support Quality of Service (QoS)?

The RE1000 supports Quality of Service (QoS).

3. Can I turn OFF the Ethernet port light on my RE1000?

Yes, you can turn the Ethernet port light OFF on the RE1000 by going to Status > Ethernet Statistics and selecting the Off radio button under Ethernet Port Lights on the web-based setup page.

4. Can I connect multiple wireless devices to my RE1000 like my router or access point?

Yes, the RE1000 acts as an extension to your router or access point so you can connect multiple devices to it.

5. Can I check the connection of my network devices connected to the RE1000 including their connection to the Internet?

Yes. Use diagnostic tests (Ping and Traceroute) to allow you to check the connections of your network devices, including connection to the Internet. You can do this by going to Administration > Diagnostics on the web-based setup page.

6. Can I add more than one RE1000 to my existing wireless network?

Yes. But since the RE1000 only gets half of the wireless signal from your main router or access point, adding multiple range extenders can provide you with even lower signal, thus, giving lesser bandwidth to your wireless computers or devices that you are going to connect to these additional extenders.

7. Do I have to disconnect and reconnect to different SSIDs when I go anywhere in my house if I am using multiple range extenders?

No. Even though you are using multiple access points or extenders in your network, you can still stay connected to any one of them as you move around the house since they would be configured using the same wireless settings like the SSID and the password.

8. Does the RE1000 have a DHCP server feature?

The RE1000 does not have a DHCP server feature.
