Titel: Connecting a USB printer through the Linksys VUSB software on a Windows-based computer

Artikel ID: 25757

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a simple, standard connector which provides a high-speed connection between computers and devices.  This usually works with a Standard A USB connector and a Standard B USB port.  This USB standard is being used to connect devices such as printers.

Instead of connecting your USB printer to one computer, you can connect it to the Standard B USB port of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router.  You will be able to access it within your home network using any of your printing-capable devices.  All you need to do is log in to your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account and add the printer using the free Linksys VUSB software (for either Windows or Mac® computer), which you can also download and install from the website.

NOTE:  The Linksys VUSB software is available to Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers (E4200 v2, EA3500, EA4500, EA6100, EA6200, EA6300, EA6400, EA6500, EA6700, EA6900 and WRT1900AC) that utilize the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.

The instructions below will guide you on how to connect your USB printer to your network using a Windows-based computer.

NOTE:  If you are using a Mac computer, click here for instructions.

Step 1:
Access your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
Click the Device List Tool.

NOTE:  If you have a Linksys WRT1900AC router, click on the Network Map Tool instead.

Step 3:
On the upper right side, click on the Add a Device button.

NOTE:  Alternatively, you can click on the  button in the Device List/Network Map Tool on your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account home page.

Step 4:
Under the Select the type of device to add to your network page, select USB Printer.

Step 5:
Connect your printer to the USB port of your router.

Step 6:
Select the Click here link in the Add a USB printer page under the For Windows PC: category to download the free Linksys VUSB software.

Step 7:
When asked whether to open or save it to your computer, select the Save file option then click OK.

Step 8:
Locate and extract the downloaded Linksys VUSB installer.  Right-click the file and select the Extract to option.

Step 9:
Once the extraction opens, double-click Cosetup to start the installation.

Step 10:
Click Next >.

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that you temporarily close any firewall or security software that may prevent the installation from running.

Step 11:
Click Start.

Step 12:
Wait for the software to install.

Step 13:
When a prompt appears, click  to proceed.

NOTE:  You will be receiving a notification message that the Linksys VUSB software is being installed on your computer, wait for it to finish.

Step 14:
When the Control Center software has been installed window appears, click Finish.

After the installation process is completed, click the Linksys VUSB file to install the printer so that it can communicate with your router and other devices on your network.

Your printer has a default name assigned to it by the manufacturer, for example, "Canon Pixma MP490".  If you've renamed the printer to something like "Kitchen Printer", that name will appear instead.

NOTE:  If your printer name doesn't appear on the list of available printers when you try to print, you need to install the printer driver (software) on your computer.  To do this, insert the CD that came with your printer in each of the computers you want to access the printer from.  The CD will have the necessary drivers for the printer.
