Title: Changing the wireless network password of your Linksys router

Article ID: 22092

A wireless password is important to secure your wireless network against unwanted connections from other users and their wireless devices.  They need to provide this password first if they want to connect to the specific network that you have set up.  This way, the allowable access to your network is properly limited to those you only know.

This article will show you how to change the wireless password of your router.  It is important to update this from time-to-time should other people find out the password that you are keeping.

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.  Open any web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari®) and enter “192.168.1.1” on the Address bar then press [Enter].

NOTE:  If you cannot access the web-based setup page using “192.168.1.1”, your IP address may have been changed.  For instructions in knowing your router’s IP address, click here.

Step 2:
You will be asked for your log-in details.  The default log-in is a blank field for the user name and "admin” for password.  If you have set up a User name and Password for your Linksys router before, enter your personalized credentials instead.

NOTE:  If you have lost or forgotten the User name and Password of your Linksys router, you may need to reset the router.  To learn more on about resetting your Linksys router, click here.

Step 3:
Click the Wireless tab then click the Wireless Security sub-tab.

Step 4:
If you are using WPA/WPA2 security mode, go to the Passphrase field to view your wireless network password.  To change it, enter your desired wireless network password on that specific field as well.

If you are using the WEP security mode, the wireless network password is located under the Key 1 field.  To change this, select 40/64-bit (10 hex digits) under Encryption.  Enter any value under the Passphrase field then click the Generate button.  This will help you in automatically generating a new password instead of creating one manually.  The new wireless network password will appear under the Key 1 field.

Step 5:
Click  to save your changes.

Other things to remember

After changing your wireless password, the wireless devices that are currently connected to your network will be disconnected.  Thus, you have to reconnect them using the new password you set.  Click on the links below for instructions on how to connect various devices to the network:
