Title: Manually updating the firmware of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router

Article ID: 26632

Benefits of keeping the firmware updated

Updating the firmware of your router enables you to fully enjoy the complete features of your Linksys router.  It is especially important to update the firmware when installing your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router for the first time to prevent a notification from prompting when you access some of the router and network settings.

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that all devices (e.g. printer, hard drive, USB storage) are disconnected before starting the update process.

There are two (2) steps you need to perform to complete the manual update of the router’s firmware:

i.   Download the latest available firmware
ii.  Upload the latest firmware via the local router interface

QUICK TIP:  You can opt to enable the automatic update feature of your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router as it is faster and more efficient in keeping the router up-to-date.  For details on how to automatically update the firmware of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, click here.

NOTE:  The Linksys WRT1900AC is used in this example.

Download the latest available firmware

Step 1:
Go to http://support.linksys.com.  Enter the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router model on the search bar and click on the Search icon.

Step 2:
Once the product page opens, go to the Downloads tab.  Select the hardware version of your router from the drop-down menu and look for the firmware Download link for the latest available firmware.

NOTE:  The License Agreement window will open.  Save the End User License Agreement (EULA) PDF document.

Step 3:
Click the I accept the terms & conditions check box and click Accept.

Step 4:
On the pop-up window, click Save.

Step 5:
Save the firmware on your Desktop and click Save again.

Wait until your download is completed.

Once finished, the firmware should be on the Desktop of your computer.

NOTE:  If you happen to download a zip file, right-click on it first and select Extract All… to unzip.  A zip file means that the actual firmware file to be uploaded is contained within it.  Extracting the zip file will reveal the firmware for your router.

You will need to access your router settings to finish the update process.  To do this, follow the steps below.

Upload the latest firmware via the local router interface

Your router comes with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, a free service that allows you to manage and configure your router, or check your home network instantly from wherever you are.  For more information about the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, click here.

Step 1:
Launch a web browser and access the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account by entering “192.168.1.1” or “myrouter.local” in the Address bar then press [Enter].  When the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account login page appears, enter “admin” as the default router password then click Sign In.

Step 2:
Under Router Settings, click Connectivity.

Step 3:
Under the Firmware Update section, click Choose File.

Step 4:
Select the latest firmware that is saved on your Desktop and click Open.

Step 5:
Click Start.

Step 6:
On the Update firmware pop-up box, click Yes.

Your router will start updating the firmware.

NOTE:  During this process, it is important that you do not power OFF the router or close the browser window to avoid corrupting your router.

Step 7:
A Router Reboot screen will pop up.  Click Ok to continue.

NOTE:  The router reboot process usually takes a few minutes.

Step 8:
Once the firmware update is successfully completed, click Ok on the Firmware update complete screen.

You should have successfully updated the firmware of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router manually.

If you experience failure when updating the firmware, try to powercycle your router and computer before running the update again.  If this doesn't work still you can repeat the same process on another computer to further isolate the issue.  If the issue persists, reset the router to factory defaults and run the update again.

QUICK TIP:  For information regarding updated drivers for a particular operating system, you may refer to the Release Notes found in the Downloads tab of your Linksys device's product page.
