Setting up a server behind a Linksys router

A server operates as the main computer on your network which could host several applications for the network’s client computers.  As an example, a server acts as a file server, a printer server or an email server.  Read on to know more about setting up a server behind a Linksys router.

Before setting up your server and Linksys router, first make sure that you have an active Internet connection.  You can check this by directly connecting your computer to the modem using an Ethernet cable and try browsing any website.  If you can connect to the Internet, you may proceed with the router setup.  If not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.

NOTE:  It is strongly recommended that the server is connected to the router using an Ethernet cable for a stable connection.

To set up a server behind a Linksys router, you need to do the following:

i.    Connect the server to the Linksys router
ii.   Set up the router for Internet connection
iii.  Set up Port Forwarding on the Linksys router for server applications

Connect the server to the Linksys router

Connect the server to your router and connect the router to the modem.

NOTE:  After ensuring that you have an active Internet connection, connect the modem to the router’s Internet port and the server to any of the four Ethernet ports on the router’s back panel using an Ethernet cable.
