Guidelines when using the Linksys LAPAC2600 802.11k and Fast Roaming (802.11r) feature

The 802.11k standard provides mechanisms for Access Points (APs) and clients to dynamically measure the available radio resources.  In an 802.11k - enabled network, APs and clients can send neighbor reports, beacon reports, and link measurement reports.  This allows the APs and clients to take appropriate connection actions.  You can enable or disable 802.11k SSID.

The Fast Roaming (802.11r) mechanism minimizes delay when a voice client transitions from one (1) Basic Service Set (BSS) to another within the same Extended Service Set (ESS).  The Fast BSS Transition establishes security and QoS states at the target AP before or during a re-association.  This minimizes the time required to resume data connectivity when a BSS transition appears.

Below are guidelines when enabling the 802.11k and 802.11r standards:
 
  • Wireless clients must support 802.11k or 802.11r
  • Only one (1) SSID can be turned ON 802.11r per system level
  • Must have same wireless settings
  • Must have same Subnet under the same VLAN
  • Supports WPA2â„¢ Personal and WPA2 Enterprise
  • Fast Roaming (802.11r) is operational only if the wireless client supports 802.11r standard.  If the client doesn’t have support for 802.11r standard, it falls back to normal WPA2 authentication method.
  • If Fast Roaming (802.11r) is enabled, some clients' access points without the 802.11r feature may fail to connect to the network.
