Setting up your Linksys router for DSL connection using Linksys Smart Wi-Fi

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection is a high-speed continuous digital connection to the Internet through regular phone lines. This service can leave your Internet connection open and still use the phone line for voice calls.

To set up your Linksys router with DSL Internet connection, you need to have the Username and Password given by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). These settings will be used by your router to connect to the Internet. You can also contact them if you are uncertain about the type of Internet connection you have.

QUICK TIP: There are DSL ISPs that provide a modem/router combination, a device that connects multiple computers to a single DSL line for Internet access. There are times when a modem/router conflicts with Linksys routers due to their IP address or their strict Network Address Translation (NAT) type. It is best to contact your ISP to verify if you are provided with a modem/router.

If you have a modem/router, you can configure your Linksys router in two (2) ways:

  • Cascading of routers – This set up will allow you to connect two (2) routers with two (2) different networks.
  • Setting the router to bridge mode – This set up will allow you to connect two (2) routers with just one (1) network. To learn more, click here.

To configure your router with the username and password given by your ISP, follow the steps below.

Step 1:
Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to any of the numbered ports (1-4) at the back of the Linksys router. Do not connect anything to the Internet port for now.

Expanding your network

You can also extend the range of your network, especially in situations that require you to do so. This is through the use of other networking devices from Linksys like powerline adapters.
