Combining wireless security methods for your wireless network

Setting up a wireless network at home is common due to the requirement of Internet connectivity for mobile devices.  Wireless network security is now another concern which can be addressed by applying several security methods.

Using a combination of these security methods makes your wireless network more secure from Wi-Fi sniffers, hackers and unauthorized access.  The following are information in combining the methods commonly used for securing the wireless network.

WPA / WPA2 Security Mode Enabled + Disabling of SSID Broadcast

•   How is this effective?

Enabling the WPA/WPA2 security mode is the best way to keep your wireless network safe and prevent unauthorized access.  On the other hand, disabling the SSID broadcast of your wireless network hides it from public view.

Combining the two (2) methods will improve the security of your wireless network because you will need to manually enter both the SSID of the network and the WPA/WPA2 wireless password.

Wireless MAC Filtering + WPA / WPA2 Security Mode Enabled

•   How is this effective?

Wireless MAC filtering is a way to screen devices who want to connect to your wireless network and only allow those devices that are registered.  Combining this with an enabled WPA/WPA2 security mode increases the wireless network security since registered devices will still not be able to access the network unless they enter the correct password.

Wireless MAC Filtering + Disabling of SSID Broadcast

•   How is this effective?

Disabling the SSID broadcast of your wireless network hides it from public view.  Only those who know that it is there will be able to access it since you will have to type the wireless network name (SSID) manually.

Aside from disabling the SSID broadcast of the wireless router, the wireless network will be more secure if you enable wireless MAC filtering to only allow devices registered to connect to the network.
