Setting up an FTP server on a storage link router and E-Series routers

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers are useful especially if you are hosting files that are accessed by remote users on the Internet.  The FTP server feature is available for routers with storage link functionality.

This article will guide you on how to set up an FTP server on a storage link router.  To do this, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.

Step 2:
Click Storage > FTP Server.

Step 3:
Select Enabled for the FTP Server.

NOTE:  The FTP Server is set to Disabled by default.

Step 4:
Click on Specify Folder to select a folder for FTP access.

Step 5:
Enter a name in the Display Name field.  This will be the name that will appear when you log in to the FTP server.

Step 6:
Select the folder of your FTP server.  If you want to share the entire partition, check the Share Entire Partition box then Save Settings.

NOTE:  If you want to share only a specific folder within the storage device in the FTP server, click on the Enter into Folder then select the folder you want to share and click Save Settings.

NOTE:  The Display Name and Folder used here are for sample purposes only.  It may vary depending on your actual setup.

Connecting to an FTP server

To access the FTP server, clients/remote users should know the link to be used to access or log in, and then follow the steps provided below:

Step 1:
Enter the FTP server address in the Address bar of your web browser.

NOTE:  The format for the FTP server address is “ftp:// + Internet IP address of the router + : + FTP port used by the router”.  In this example, ftp://198.133.219.25:21 is used.  The router’s Internet IP address can be found under the Status tab in the web-based setup page.  The router’s default FTP port is 21.

Step 2:
Enter the Username and Password.  You can find this information in the account access that you have set up for your storage device.

If your router is set to automatically obtain an IP address from the modem (DHCP), it is best to check the Internet IP address of your router.  This is the IP address that you will be using for your FTP server address.  To check, click on Status.

NOTE:  The router's Internet IP Address value used in this article is for sample purposes only.  It may vary depending on your actual setup.
