Security tips for a work at home setup

In order to protect their employees from getting infected by COVID-19, many businesses now are switching to a work at home setup.  As more people have embraced working at home, scammers and hackers have also started to take advantage of the situation.  Home networks are more vulnerable to attacks since they are less secure compared to the networks that businesses have.

This article will teach you how to protect your network from scammers and hackers.

Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Using a VPN helps keep valuable company information away from scammers and hackers by creating a secure path for your internet traffic.  It’s also helpful for companies that have employees access shared files and documents on a company network or server.

Putting a password on your home network

Even when you are not working at home, protecting your home network with a password is essential.  This helps you prevent hackers and scammers from accessing your network.  It is possible to check your network traffic and gain access to your devices when someone logs on to your home network.

Don’t download suspicious attachments and files

If you receive an email with a suspicious attachment, double check first or ask the person who sent it to you since it may contain malicious codes and viruses that could destroy your computer or network.

Don’t click on doubtful links

Always check the links that you see in emails.  If you see anything unusual like incorrectly spelled words, unfamiliar sites or inappropriate materials, don't click on it.  This could be the hacker’s way of scamming you into giving your personal information or attacking your network.

Don’t give away information

Some scammers may send you phishing emails containing links that may take you to fraudulent websites.  These sites may look legitimate and may ask you to give out personal information or login information.  You should never give out information to links that you receive in an email.
